Four Tips for a Bedroom Remodel

If you are interested in updating your bedroom for either increased value, or simply for a stylish new look, here are a few tips to consider before embarking on the project.

1. Insulation
On many older homes, insulation is poor or non-existent, because of that homeowners may be paying the price during those cold winter months. If a bedroom remodel is in order, examine your home’s insulation needs. Spray-in insulation is a fairly simple way to add protection and energy efficient savings.

2. Electrical Work
Similar to insulation, wiring in the older homes may not be exactly “up to code” as they have to be now.  In certain situations, that can be problematic for a homeowner to undertake, and one that can be costly to remedy.  When you flip a light switch on, an established light fixture is supposed to turn on, but when the TV in the other room shuts off, or a fuse blows, it is time for a licensed electrician to come and take a look.

3. Flooring
Bedroom flooring is certainly a personal preference. If your bedroom has hardwood floors, perhaps you will be able to save them and spruce them up with an updated stain.  On the other hand you may be looking for the plushy feeling between your toes that wall-to-wall carpet provides.

One thing to consider when determining what type of flooring to use, is the foot traffic in that room. Do you have young children who love running in and out of the room? Or perhaps a dog who likes to wake you up in the morning after digging around in the yard? Just some food for thought.

4. Molding Work
Update molding, especially crown molding, is a fairly inexpensive way to spruce up the look of your bedroom. Installing crown molding can be fairly intimidating for beginners, so be patient. Always remember upside-down and backwards (if you plan on attempting, or have installed crown molding, you will understand what that means soon enough!).  You will be surprised at how a few strips of wood can dress up and give a room a more vibrant updated feel.
